This design proposal seeks to breathe new life into the existing Marra Square retail centre in Langebaan. The architecture enhances the prominence of existing historical gables by letting the new buildings recede and creating quiet, rhythmic facades. In principle the design activates the street edges through the introduction of line shops which link to an internal shopping street that connects two outdoor courtyards.
Upstairs bachelor flats take advantage of the superb position within Langebaan and face in a westerly direction towards the lagoon. Urban linkages are made to the neighbouring development to consolidate and enhance the touristic core of the town. The architecture seeks to find a contemporary expression for the local vernacular style through the use of whitewashed, low lying, flat roofed buildings and the use of slatted light. In collaboration with Janine de Waal Architects.
