Callan graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Cape Town (with distinction for his design) in 2019. His thesis, entitled Biotic Machine, explored the intersections between industrial ruins and sustainable aquaculture, centred on an underutilised jetty in Cape Town’s  Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

He’s also part of Team Mahali – Solar Decathlon Africa 2019, which is a collegiate design-build competition for a net-zero energy houses in Benguerir, Morocco. The challenge is to integrate regional sustainable raw materials in which enhance the African specificity.

He joined Open City Architects in June 2019 as an architect in training. He also undertook a year of practical experience at Cape Town firm Darryl Croome Architects in-between his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Within this year, he worked on high-end residential developments along the Atlantic Seaboard to cluster housing schemes in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
